Biomedical Library News 16 October 2006 New journals from BioMed Central Two new journals have been launched by BMC: 1. Neural Development considers articles on all aspects of molecular, cellular, physiological or behavioural methods to provide novel insights into the mechanisms that underlie the formation of the nervous system. 2. Source Code for Biology and Medicine considers articles on all aspects of workflow for information systems, decision support systems, client user networks, database management, and data mining. It aims to publish source code for free distribution and use in order to advance biological and medical research. 15 September 2006 Support for researchers UNSW Library has subscribed to 3 new databases that may be of interest to research staff: 1. COS Funding Opportunities is a compiled database of available opportunities for grants, fellowships, prizes and other type of funding. It is an extensive database with opportunities for recipients anywhere in the world, working in any discipline. 2. PapersInvited was conceived and developed to assist researchers who are seeking publishing opportunities for their research papers. 3. Community of Scholars provides authoritative information about more than 1 million scholars and organizations around the world, together with verified affiliation and publication information. 14 September 2006 New BioMed Central journal BioMed Central has launched the following new open access journal: Infectious Agents and Cancer. This journal considers articles on all aspects of basic, clinical and translational research that provide an insight into the association between chronic infections and cancer. 3 July 2006 ClinicalResource@Ovid UNSW Library has subscribed to a new medical decision support tool from Ovid. ClinicalResource@Ovid provides evidence-based information for use at the point of care. This resource integrates fully with other UNSW-subscribed Ovid products, allowing linking through to Medline, Embase and Books@Ovid. It will be continually updated with new content. 26 June 2006 Australia's health 2006 Published on the 21st June, Australia's health 2006 is the tenth biennial health report of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. It is the nation's authoritative source of information on patterns of health and illness, determinants of health, the supply and use of health services, and health services expenditure. 12 April 2006 Escherichia coli and Salmonella A key text from the American Microbiology Society is now available online. The electronic version of the second edition of Escherichia coli and Salmonella: Cellular and molecular biology forms the basis of EcoSal, a continually updated Web resource that aims to be a comprehensive archive of the entire corpus of knowledge about the enteric bacterial cell. 10 April 2006 Methods in Enzymology now available online The series Methods in Enzymology is now available in full text online, back to Vol.1 (1955). Each volume in the series can be searched individually or the whole collection searched at once. Many of the recent breakthroughs in life science research are built on past developments first introduced in the published volumes of the Methods in Enzymology series. 6 March 2006 New genetics resource The NCBI Whole Genome Association (WGA) resource has been established to provide researchers with access to genotype and associated phenotype data from clinical studies. NIH's goal in this cross-institute initiative is to identify genetic and environmental factors related to clinical phenotype measures and thereby help elucidate the link between genes and disease. 3 February 2006 New biotechnology database The GEN Biotechnology database is a hub for information on the Biotechnology industry. It provides information on current trends in the industry, including company information. The site includes a glossary of biotechnology terms and also provides access to Genetic Engineering News and a number of scholarly biotechnology journals. 9 January 2006 CAB Abstracts Archive 1910-1972 UNSW Library has purchased the CAB Abstracts Archive. The archive combines 17 printed abstract journals into a single, searchable electronic database. It covers the literature from 1910 to 1972 and contains over 1,860,000 records on every aspect of agricultural science, veterinary medicine, nutrition and natural resources. It has been re-indexed with modern terms. 4 January 2006 CINAHL now has clinical query filters The CINAHL database on Ovid now offers limits to Clinical Queries. These limits restrict retrieval to clinically sound studies. There are five categories: Etiology, Prognosis, Qualitative, Reviews, and Treatment. The emphasis for each of these categories may be "sensitive", "specific" or "minimum difference", which is a trade-off between the sensitivity and specificity of the search retrieval. The Clinical Queries are based on the work of R. Brian Haynes MD, PhD et al. of the Health Information Research Unit (HIRU) at McMaster University 30 November 2005 Open access journals added to Web of Science Four more journals from BioMed Central have been accepted for tracking by The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). They are on track to receive an impact factor in 2008. * BMC Developmental Biology * BMC Immunology * BMC Neurology * BMC Structural Biology 29 November 2005 PsychiatryOnline A new electronic resource is available through Sirius. PsychiatryOnline is a website of psychiatric reference materials, including books, journals and self-assessment tools. It features the DSM-IV-TR in full text. 18 October 2005 Birds of North America Online UNSW Library has arranged trial access to BNA Online until 11/11/05. The database provides detailed scientific information for each of the 716 species of birds nesting in the USA and Canada. It includes images and sound recordings. 13 September 2005 Gene Reviews NCBI has added Gene Reviews to its Bookshelf. Developed at the University of Washington, Seattle, this resource contains expert-authored disease reviews. 12 September 2005 Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals database The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is now hosting OMIA, the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Animals database of genes, inherited disorders, and traits in animals authored by Dr. Frank Nicholas of the University of Sydney, Australia. 29 August 2005 New journal from BioMed Central - Head and Neck Medicine. BioMed Central (BMC) has just announced its 75th open access journal Head and Neck Medicine. The human head and face is the target structure of a large number of medical disciplines. This journal aims to induce 'intra-interdisciplinary' thinking of scientists by bringing together the findings achieved by different researchers from various specialties. 26 August 2005 Current Protocols in Microbiology UNSW Library has arranged trial access to Current Protocols in Microbiology until 31/12/05. This resource provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for analyzing bacteria, animal and plant viruses, fungi, protozoans and other microbes. It offers updated coverage of emerging technologies and concepts, such as biofilms, quorum sensing and quantitative PCR, as well as proteomic and genomic methods. 4 August 2005 Trial access to ScienceNOW news database ScienceNOW is an online news service of Science magazine, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to providing daily news, it has a searchable archive and an email update service. Trial access is available until 25/10/05 3 August 2005 New trial databases from the publishers of "Science" Trial access is available to three new databases until 25/10/05: 1. STKE: Signal Transduction and Knowledge Environment presents original perspectives, reviews and protocols in signal transduction research. 2. SAGE KE: Science of Aging Knowledge Environment covers research advances in the area of aging and age-related diseases. 3. AIDScience is an archival database specialising in AIDS research, prevention and vaccine development. 25 July 2005 Trial of Thieme journals and electronic books UNSW Library is providing trial access to Thieme-connect and Thieme ElectronicBook Library from 21/07/05 to 31/08/05. Thieme-connect is Thieme's online journals collection. This resource specialises in medicine, chemistry, and life science. Thieme ElectronicBook Library provides online access to Thieme's collection of electronic reference books in medicine and life sciences. The collection includes colour atlases, pocket books and diagnostic resources. 19 July 2005 Trial access to Genome Biology UNSW Library is providing trial access to the Genome Biology database from 08/07/05 to 08/08/05. Genome Biology serves the biological research community as an international forum for the dissemination, discussion and critical review of information about all areas of biology informed by genomic research. Subjects covered include any aspect of molecular, cellular, organismal or population biology studied from a genomic perspective, as well as genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, genomic methods (including structure prediction), computational biology, sequence analysis (including large-scale and cross-genome analyses), comparative biology and evolution. 7 July 2005 New interface for Ovid databases From 5th July 2005, Ovid databases such as Medline, Embase, CINAHL and others, will use a new search interface. The functionality of the databases remains unchanged. A staff member from the Biomedical Library has updated our Medline tutorial to reflect the changes to the look of the interface. Please note: There appears to be an incompatibilty problem with version 9.2 of Netscape when used on Macintosh computers. We are investigating this with Ovid. Please contact Steve Kennedy (Tel: 9385-2675) if you are experiencing any problems using the new interface. 26 June 2005 New biology journal from the Public Library of Science (PLoS) PLoS, the Public Library of Science launched their third Open Access journal this week. PLoS Computational Biology is the first journal to launch of the three new titles announced for introduction in 2005. It features "works of exceptional significance that further our understanding of living systems at all scales through the application of computational methods". 16 June 2005 Name changes for Australian life sciences databases 1. The Australian Bibliography of Agriculture (ABOA) and Streamline have now been combined into Agriculture and Natural Resources Index: ANR-Index. Older material from these databases has been archived into Agriculture and Natural Resources Index Archive: ANR-Index Archive 2. Australian Rural Research in Progress: ARRIP is now called Agriculture and Natural Resources Research: ANR-Research 3. Completed Australian Rural Research Projects: CARRP has changed its name to Agriculture and Natural Resources Research Archive: ANR-Research Archive 15 June 2005 Trial of Micromedex Healthcare Series UNSW Library is providing trial access to the Micromedex Healthcare Series database until 30/06/05. It provides clinical information on drugs, disease, acute care, toxicology, alternative medicine, as well as being a comprehensive tool to educate patients. 26 May 2005 New Public Health Information and Data Tutorial Released The US National Library of Medicine, in collaboration with the University of Michigan Public Health Library & Informatics Division and Partners in Information Access for the Public Health Workforce, has released the Public Health Information and Data Tutorial. This online tutorial is a new tool designed to help the public health workforce effectively locate and use health information. It has a US focus. 16 May 2005 What Scientists really need - Carol Tenopir's findings Carol Tenopir, from the University of Tennessee, has conducted research for many years on discipline-specific usage patterns of scholarly journals. She recently conducted surveys at UNSW and other Australian Universities. Published here is a set of slides from the AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy (Washington, D.C., April 21-22) which provide an overview of her findings. In addition, online-only content is complemented by news and analysis from Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Medicine, Nature Reviews Drug Discovery and BioEntrepreneur, plus science careers news from Naturejobs 21 April 2005 The Dictionary of bioinformatics and computational biology The Dictionary of bioinformatics and computational biology includes information on terms relating to molecular biology, genomics, proteomics and computational methods of analysis of biological data. 20 April 2005 New genomics dictionary available online The 2nd edition of the Encyclopedic dictionary of genetics, genomics and proteomics includes a vast range of terms and concepts dealing with biochemistry, immunology, hereditary diseases, molecular evolution, genomics and proteomics. 19 April 2005 Mouse Models of Human Cancer Mouse models allow investigators to better understand causal relationships between specific genetic alterations and tumors, utilize new imaging techniques, and to test novel therapies. Mouse Models of Human Cancer provides researchers and students with a complete resource on the subject, including systematic coverage of principles, methodologies and applications. 18 April 2005 Burger's Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery This online version of Burger's Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery offers access to a broad coverage of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery for medicinal chemists, biologists, pharmacologists and molecular biologists. This includes a current and global perspective of drug design, and drug development. 14 April 2005 New trial database - COS Funding Opportunities COS Funding Opportunities is a research funding database. Updated daily, COS Funding Opportunities includes more than 23,000 records, representing over 400,000 funding opportunities, worth over $33 billion. UNSW Library is providing trial access from 12/4/05 - 30/4/05. All guidelines are now available through a single product eTG Complete which also allows a single search to cover all titles with over 2500 clinical topics. 7 April 2005 Trial of Martindale Trial access has been arranged to Martindale: the complete drug reference. Martindale provides global summaries of information on drugs and medicines in use around the world. The trial is available until 30 April 2005. Please send feedback to Jill Denholm 5 April 2005 Molecular Cloning: an online manual on the web UNSW Library now has an online subscription to Molecular Cloning.com. It is a useful tool for laboratories working with DNA. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the print version of the third edition of Molecular Cloning: A Laboratory Manual. It contains summarized versions of protocols. 10 March 2005 New open access journal to be launched by the Public Library of Science (PLoS) On March 8th, the Public Library of Science announced the launch of PLoS Pathogens, the newest peer-reviewed, open-access journal in its line-up. It will commence publication in September 2005. 4 March 2005 Oxford Textbook E-book collection A number of new titles have been added to the Oxford Textbook collection of electronic books. They are accessible through Books@Ovid. It is available through the Library Resources Database or Sirius. 2 February 2005 BioMedProtocols database available to UNSW staff and students BioMedProtocols is an online database of full-text, peer-reviewed life science and biomedical research protocols. It provides online access to all content published in the Humana Press book series 'Methods in Molecular Biology' and 'Methods in Molecular Medicine'. Biomedical Library Computer Labs All students from the Faculty of Medicine should have automatic swipe access to both computer labs in the Biomedical Library using their student card. If your card is not activated, please go to the E-spot in the Red Centre.
