Definition of off campus users

Off campus students are those whose formal program enrolments do not require either that they attend Kensington or COFA campuses at all, or, if so, only for short periods of orientation or for progress consultations. Students with extensive off campus placement periods are also included for the duration of those placements. ADFA students are served by ADFA Library.

Off campus staff are those whose work is undertaken totally, or substantially, beyond the Kensington or COFA campuses. ADFA staff are served by ADFA Library.

Equity of access philosophy
The key philosophical driver for the existence of off campus services is the provision of equity of access to library resources and services, including opportunities to develop information literacy skills, for all students and staff. Off campus students and staff face distinct challenges in these areas. Distinct policies and procedures are necessary.

Membership of geographically convenient libraries
Users are encouraged to use more geographically convenient libraries where access to these is possible. University Libraries Australia provides access to membership of most university libraries in Australia.

Electronic library use preference
Users are encouraged to use the electronic library and its services through www.library.unsw.edu.au to meet immediate needs wherever possible. It is recognised that technological limitations exist for some users.

Access to off campus services
The trigger for access to off campus services is user registration which allows the off campus user to be:

  • Verified as a bona fide off campus user
  • Included in the Inter Library Loan user database with specific privileges
  • Registered for copyright purposes
  • Brought to the attention of discipline specialist librarians with specific responsibilities for off campus services.
Materials requests processes
Materials are requested through on-line request forms which are automatically directed to the relevant Off Campus Librarian's mailbox for screening. Appropriate requests are then forwarded to the UNSW Interlibrary Loan Service.

Categories of materials

  • Books from UNSW Library collection are dispatched without direct charge; student/staff member pays for return postage. Books from other libraries may also be dispatched without direct charge, subject to the conditions imposed by the lending library, with the student/staff member paying for return postage.
  • Articles from UNSW collection not directly obtainable by users at their desktop may be scanned or photocopied and are sent free of charge. Articles from other libraries may be sent free of charge.
Where any items are required urgently the current premium service charges apply.

Remote reference
General mechanisms for remote reference, such as HelpOnline, email or telephone should be the first resort for users, with off campus services librarians providing specialist support and back up if needed.

Research consultation
The research consultation / reference appointment is the preferred mechanism for more focused and extensive assistance with research strategies. Research consultations are arranged through the off campus services librarians.

Technical support
Self help first, then the use of general inquiry mechanisms and on-line reporting, then contact with off campus services librarians are the preferred procedures for the resolution of technical issues. Where appropriate, contact with course management technology help, telecommunications help or IT help will be facilitated.

Embedded information skills
Off campus programs are a Library priority for the embedding of information skills within the teaching program, whether face-to-face or on-line.

A key Library priority is to work with academic staff to:

  • integrate information skills within any face-to-face elements of off campus programs
  • provide extensive on-line information skills tutorial materials and resources to compensate for lack of access to on campus services.
Service Review
Regular Library-wide review of the provision of off campus services will be implemented, incorporating evaluative data and feedback. Information issues should also be a part of overall course evaluation where possible.
