Interlibrary Loans

All Interlibrary Loan Requests are made through the Library's Catalogue (LRD) by logging into Your Borrower Record and selecting the ILL Request tab.

The Interlibrary Loans service obtains material not held by the UNSW Library to support the study, research and teaching programs of the UNSW staff and postgraduate students. The service is also available to eligible honours students. Items can be obtained from both local and overseas sources.

Other Document Supply Services

The following services should be used instead of Interlibrary loans if appropriate

Intercampus Loans  For loans between the Kensington and the College of Fine Arts campus at Paddington
Document Delivery  For supply of books and journal articles from the UNSW collection to other libraries.
Off-Campus Users Requests  For supply of loans and copies to registered off-campus users

Frequently Asked Questions about Interlibrary Loans

Who is eligible?

UNSW staff, postgraduate and honours students.

What material is available via Interlibrary Loan?

Items not held by the UNSW Library including books, journal articles, conference papers, theses, etc. Items not usually available on interlibrary loan include rare books, reference materials, whole issues or volumes of serials, materials in heavy demand in the lending library, and very recent publications still in print.
Please contact library staff for further advice.

Making an Interlibrary Loan request

All Interlibrary Loan requests must now be made through the Library’s Catalogue (LRD) by logging into Your Borrower Record and selecting the ILL Request tab.

To ensure efficient processing of requests, always supply full and accurate bibliographical information, the source of reference and avoid abbreviations.

For prompt notification, please provide current contact details.

Please check Catalogue (LRD) and/or Sirius before completing your Interlibrary Loan request to make sure that the item is not held in the collection.

How long does it take?

Users can track the progress of their requests by logging into Your Borrower Record.

Interlibrary loan requests will be ordered as soon as possible after receipt. Response time also depends on the turnaround time of the supplying library or document delivery service.
Items requested from overseas may take longer to obtain.

How will I be notified?

Articles will be sent electronically to your desktop unless you elect that they be sent to the postal address on the request form. However, documents can only be sent electronically if they are supplied from the responding library in that format.

For Kensington patrons, borrowed items (books) will be available for collection from the Level 2 Loans & Information Desk only.
Items requested for COFA patrons will be available for collection from the COFA Library Loans & Information Desk.
An e-mail message will be sent advising that the item is available for collection.

Items on loan are usually available for four weeks but the loan period depends upon the lending library.
If requiring renewal of any loan, please contact the Interlibrary Loans Office prior to return date. Please send e-mail renewal requests to: ill.one@unsw.edu.au
