Library Conditions of Use

UNSW Library facilities and resources are provided to support the educational, research and administrative activities of the University. All students, staff and members of the University Council are registered as Library members. Other people may be registered as Library members under conditions determined by the University Librarian.

Access to the Library

  • All Library members and visitors to the campus have access to the public areas within the Library and to the facilities and collections in these areas
  • Current students, staff and members of the University Council have access to the Library’s electronic resources
  • Other Library members can access a restricted selection of electronic resources on Library computers
  • Anyone using Library facilities may be asked to show relevant identification and may be required to authenticate themselves before using the Library’s electronic resources
  • Use of other users’ accounts or attempting to gain access to Library resources under false pretences is prohibited
  • Members and visitors are prohibited from helping unauthorised users gain access to resources
  • UNSW Library members have priority for all Library services and facilities.

Use of the Library

Lending conditions, loan periods and penalties for overdue items are detailed on the Library website. It is the responsibility of Library members to familiarise themselves with this information and adhere to loan periods and conditions

  • Library computers are provided for Library members and visitors for the use of Library and course-related resources
  • Users of Library computers must comply with University policies and conditions of use: Acceptable Use of UNSW Information and Communication Technology Resources and Email Policy
  • Library members and visitors must observe the Copyright Act 1968 provisions and regulations at all times when accessing library resources both on and off campus. Users are responsible for ensuring their use of resources complies with the legislation and licence agreements.

Conduct in the Library

Library members and visitors must respect other library users and not behave in a manner likely to interfere with the comfort or convenience of others in accordance with UNSW Code of Conduct and Student Misconduct Rules. The Library aims to be a safe and healthy environment, conducive to study for all users.

         - Smoking is not permitted
         - Drinking is permitted (bottles or cups with lids only)
         - Eating is permitted (cold dry food only), with these exceptions:
               Eating is not permitted when using a computer
               Eating is not permitted on Level 9 (Main Library)
         - Mobile phones should have the ring tone set to silent
         - Members and visitors are expected to dispose of litter
           in the bins provided throughout the Library

  • UNSW Library reserves the right to check bags, folders and other belongings of members and visitors
  • Displaying posters and notices is allowed at the discretion of the University Librarian. Permission must be obtained in advance
  • Photography and filming require prior permission from the University Librarian
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times

Infringement of Library rules

Refer to the Schedule of penalties and fines that may be imposed for certain offences.

Please note that in the event of these fines or penalties being imposed, assessment results and student administration records will be blocked for UNSW students until the matter is resolved.
