How to deposit a copy of your thesis to the Library

One copy of every PhD or Masters by research thesis submitted to the Registrar is deposited in the University Library.

Submit the Library deposit copy to the Graduate Research School, NOT to the Library.

The Library copy:

  • must first be processed through the Graduate Research School who will then forward it to the Library
  • should be presented on acid free permanent paper in a permanent legible original typescript - printed copy, laser printed copy, computer carbon ribbon - or a good quality photocopy of one of these. Faded, dirty or faint copies are not acceptable. At the discretion of the Librarian an additional copy on CD or other media may be submitted.
Binding

Prior to the award of the degree the candidate shall ensure that the Library deposit copy is bound in boards, covered with buckram.

Theses which include mounted photographs, folded graphs, etc should have the leaves packed at the spine to ensure even thickness of the volume.

Lettering

The bound volume shall be lettered on the spine as follows:

a) at the bottom and across - UNSW; or if the volume is too thin for this – UNSW may be printed vertically
b) 70mm from the bottom and across, with the degree and year of submission of the thesis, for example:

PhD
2007

c) evenly spaced between the statement of the degree and the year and the top of the spine, the name of the candidate, initials first and then the surname, reading upwards in one line.

No further lettering or decoration is required on the spine or anywhere on the binding.

Binders

The Library copy should be bound by a panel of approved binders, each of whom is aware of the University's requirements.
