Digital Thesis Submission

As a graduate research student, you must deposit (submit) a digital copy of your thesis to the University Library before you are eligible to graduate. This applies to PhD and Masters by Research theses only. This deposited copy must by the final, examined version of your work. This copy will then be made accessible online via UNSWorks/ADT. ADT and UNSWorks have combined to increase the exposure of UNSW research by making it available globally, free of charge.

How to deposit a digital copy of your Thesis

You may deposit a copy yourself using the UNSWorks/ADT Deposit Form. If you deposit this way please do not set the document’s security. If you require assistance with this process please contact the ADT Team.

Before depositing your thesis, please ensure the following:

  • your degree confirmation letter has been forwarded to the ADT Team by the Graduate Research School
  • if you require restricted access to your thesis, your permission for restriction letter has been forwarded to the ADT Team by the Graduate Research School
  • follow the checklist for depositors and the instructions for restricting access to your Thesis (below)

Checklist for depositors

Please ensure you comply with all the following requirements:

  • only PhD and Masters by Research theses are included in UNSWorks/ADT
  • the thesis you deposit must be the final University-approved version that has undergone examination. Deposit only the final, examined version of your thesis with the Library.
  • the electronic version deposited online must be identical to the paper-bound copy which you should submit directly to the Graduate Research School, Rupert Myers Building
  • you must provide written evidence that you have met all requirements for the degree, e.g. letter from Dean of Graduate Research School. Post or fax to ADT Team, Library Level 2, UNSW SYDNEY NSW 2052 (fax) 02 9662-1203
  • read the Copyright Guidelines for Digital Theses
Restricting access to your Thesis

UNSWorks/ADT normally provide unrestricted world wide access to digital theses via the web. However, you may apply for whole or partial restriction of your thesis.

To apply you must submit the Application for Restricted Access of Thesis & Confidentiality Form (pdf, word) to the Graduate Research School 6 months prior to submitting your thesis for examination. Restrictions of up to 24 months must be approved by your supervisor. Applications for restrictions greater than 24 months must be approved by the Dean of Graduate Research. Please visit the Graduate Research School website for further information.

You may apply to restrict access to both the paper-bound and the digital copies of your thesis, or just the digital copy. In addition, the Library will restrict access to third party copyright material in your thesis for which you have been unable to obtain written permission.

Restriction options in UNSWorks/ADT:

  • no restrictions – world wide access (default)
  • restricted access globally for up to 24 months
  • partial restrictions for third party copyright reasons, e.g. diagrams, charts, must be discussed with ADT Team in the Library. Contact via Email or by phone on 9385-1889
