Copyright Guidelines

The Part VB Licence allows UNSW staff to copy print and graphic material for educational purposes without direct permission from the copyright owner.

Electronic copying fact sheets are available on the UNSW Copyright site: text version or table version

The limits are:

Articles contained in a periodical publication:  the whole or part of an article may be copied. Two or more articles contained in the same periodical publication may be copied if the articles relate to the same subject matter. These limits apply on a course-by-course basis for both hardcopy and digital copying.

Literary or dramatic work contained in a published anthology:  the whole or part of a work may be copied, up to 15 pages. This provision applies to hardcopy copying.

Other copying of literary, dramatic or musical works:  a reasonable portion of the work may be copied. The Act deems that no more than 10% of the pages or one chapter (whichever is more) may be copied. More may be copied if the person copying is satisfied after reasonable investigation that copies (other than secondhand copies) of the work cannot be obtained within a reasonable time at an ordinary commercial price. For hardcopy copying these limits apply on a course-by-course basis. For digital copying they apply across the whole University.

Material from websites:  only 10% of the words of each item may be copied. If the items are book chapters or journal articles follow the guidelines above. MyCourse prefers to link to articles in journals to which the Library subscribes.

Artistic works (including graphs, diagrams):  an artistic work may be copied in whole or part if that artistic work accompanies a literary or dramatic work for the purpose of explaining or illustrating the literary or dramatic work copied or it is not separately published.

If an artistic work has been separately published, no more than a reasonable portion of that work can be copied unless a new copy of the artistic work cannot be obtained within a reasonable time at an ordinary price.

There are no copyright restrictions on digital versions of an artistic work. If, however, you wish to make the work available online, it must be accompanied by a Copyright Warning Notice and a full bibliographic citation.

Copyright material in lecture notes: hardcopy material must be limited to 10% or one chapter or one article. For digital lecture notes on course servers, copyright material must be limited to short quotes or extracts (e.g. a paragraph). When greater portions are required digitally, send them to MyCourse Services Level 2, Main Library, Kensington.
