Digitisation of Copyright Course Materials

Dear Colleagues

Following the changes to the Copyright Act implemented last year, the VCAC
has endorsed a proposal to centralise the digitising of all copyright
course materials. From the beginning of second session this year the
Digitisation Service within the Library will scan material and keep the
necessary records for copyright compliance in the catalogue. From 29 July
no new copyright course material should be scanned to school and faculty
servers, and old material should be taken off, and if needed for Session 2,
transferred to the Library server.

Which materials will be processed centrally?
All copyright course material. They fall into two main categories ?
printed material such as book chapters and journals, and existing digital
documents from full text databases and electronic journals. Lecturers' own
materials such as lecture notes, tutorial solutions etc are beyond the
scope of the Service.

How to submit a request
Submit requests directly to the Digitisation Service, located within
Reserve Services on Level 2, the Library, using the Digitisation Request
Form at http://www.library.unsw.edu.au/~gsd/digireq.htm.
Material already in digital form may be sent to digisation@unsw.edu.au. For
enquiries contact either Kerrie Talmacs on ext. 2622 or Anna Troiano on
ext. 2652.

Which formats can be submitted?
Good quality photocopies and PDF files are accepted and will result in the
fastest processing. The Service will also retrieve original material from
the Library's collection for scanning although this will increase the
handling time.

What are the alternatives when material exceeds the 10%/one chapter/one
article limits?

· It may be possible to communicate a greater proportion of the work if
it is out of print or permission has been obtained from the copyright
owner;

· Printing copies may be possible because of the slightly less
restrictive limits for hard copy items;

· As a last resort it may be necessary to place original volumes in the
Reserve Services collection.

How to link to online material from course Web sites
Library staff will inform you of the URLs for course materials if you need
to make links from course Web sites.
