Journals

A journal is a collection of articles usually written by scholars in an academic or professional field. An editorial board reviews articles to decide whether they should be accepted. Articles in journals can cover very specific topics or narrow fields of research. Since journals are published on a regular basis they are also called "periodicals." Electronic journals, (e-journals), are published on the Web by publishers and scholarly organisations and are made available to you via the UNSW Library Web site.

The best way to find journal articles on your topic is to search a Library database/periodical index using Sirius. Some periodical indexes are not available via Sirius as they are in print form only. The LRD, the UNSW Library Catalogue will provide the call number.

At present, the UNSW Library has approximately 15,000 e-journals and 380 databases.

Use a Journal:

  • when doing scholarly research
  • to find out what has been written on your topic
  • to find bibliographies that point to other relevant research
