Browser

The Web allows you to access most types of information on the Internet through a browser. One of the main features of the Web is the ability to quickly link to other related information. The Web contains information beyond plain text, including sounds, images and video.

It is important that we make a distinction here between the 'Public Web', available from almost anywhere to almost anyone, and the 'Library Web', which is available only to UNSW students and staff.

Use the Public Web:

  • to find really current information
  • as a first and last resort - when you know nothing about your topic or have exhausted all other resources
  • to find information about companies
  • to find information from all levels of government - federal to local
  • to find both expert and popular opinions

Use the Library Web:

  • to link to electronic resources, provided by the UNSW Library via the Internet
  • to link to Public Web resources which have been evaluated by Library staff
  • to link to Web based subscription resources which the Library has purchased to enable access by UNSW staff and students

Examples of Web Addresses

  • http://info.library.unsw.edu.au - UNSW Library homepage
  • http://lrd.unsw.edu.au - The LRD - Library Reources Database - your library catatalogue
  • http://www.google.com - Google, a popular and well respected search engine
