This subject guide lists the major resources available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) available to students and staff of UNSW.

ABS publications

  • ABS
    Online full text access to all ABS publications from 1998 onwards.  Also a major resource for census data
  • ABS publications in print are located on the Reference shelves, Level 3 of the Social Sciences & Humanities Library. They are arranged by ABS Catalogue number: e.g. SREF 319.405/8 [4184.0] - 4184.0 is the ABS Catalogue number

How to search for ABS publications

  • ABS - search via the upper right search box or browse Articles & Papers, listed on the left hand menu under Key Products
  • To access to the full range of ABS statistical and reference information (updated weekdays at 11:30am, Canberra time) click Statistics - search by Catalogue Number, Release DateTopic or Title
  • How do I? Click Statistics to find answers to common questions about using AusStats such as Navigate to Statistics, Interpret Catalogue numbers, Use the Theme pages, Find Census Data, Cite ABS Sources
  • ABS Catalogue online via ABS- click Statistics, click By Catalogue Number, click Directories, catalogues and guides, click 1101.1, Catalogue of Publications and Products, 2005
  • Using the printed ABS Catalogue of Publications and Products [1101.0]: look in the Subject Index to find keywords. E.g. Indigenous Australians is 4184.0(59). (59) is the page number in the ABS Catalogue, giving a description of the content

ABS census time series data

  • CDATA
    Contains the census data from the 2001 and 1996 censuses, with times series and mapping facility. CDATA contains data from only 2 major Basic Community and Time Series profiles. Researchers may view, download or print census data in Excel format. Ask at the Information Desk, Level 2, for access
