Innovative Teaching and Educational Technology (ITET)

ITET is an intensive program aiming to increase knowledge of best practice in learning and teaching, develop skills in educational technology and including work on a special online project.

Lesley Ngatai
The LILT of the Lifelong Learner
 ITET1 : 2001/2002
This project developed and implemented LILT, a flexible online Information Literacy (IL) tutorial to help students develop the conceptual foundation IL skills of selecting, searching and evaluating sources.  Lesley adapted an existing information literacy package for the pilot group of students from the FBE Building Program. Students completed LILT and the WebCT assessment tasks as a formal part of their coursework. A module titled "Writing a Literature Review" was also developed for these students.
By introducing students to these basic concepts, LILT leaves more time in a classroom or laboratory setting for more specific, task oriented, subject based activities.

Helping new students find and use information
 ITET3 : 2002/2003
Building on the work begun by Lesley in ITET1, this project involved further contextualisation of LILT to the Australasian and UNSW Library environment. As an introductory IL tool, LILT v2 adopted a multidisciplinary approach, adding information about the new Ex Libris Library system.  LILT's accessibility was increased and a new section on plagiarism, and citation styles was added.
Students are taught three groups of skills related to research: selecting appropriate sources; searching Library databases and the Internet; and evaluating and citing information. Each of these skills is emphasised in a separate module with text, interactions, and an option to link to WebCT quizzes or other assessment tasks. Each Module contains a module map and a concept page for revision purposes.
A site map and FAQ provide information for academics and educators.

Designing a course framework for Information Literacy using WebCT VISTA
ITET 5 : 2004/2005
The ITET 5 project involved using WebCT Vista to develop an information literacy course framework that can be easily repurposed for use across all disciplines. The project will initially focus on redesigning, trialling and evaluating the existing biology information literacy modules for approximately 700 first year students.  Information gathered from the design, use and evaluation of this course will form the basis for a generic toolkit of design methods, templates and resources.  The project will take into consideration and incorporate effective pedagogy for learning and teaching as outlined in Guidelines on Learning that Inform Teaching at UNSW  (UNSW Learning and Teaching Unit).
