PLEASE NOTE: SciFinder Scholar has a limit of 5 simultaneous users
SciFinder Scholar is only available on campus
(off campus access is possible via a UDUS connection).
SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD AND CONFIGURATION When using SciFinder Scholar from a UNSW Library Workstation, please click on the SciFinder Scholar icon on the desktop. The software required to access the Dataset is already installed on ALL Library Workstations. If you cannot see the SciFinder icon on the desktop then please ask at the Level 2 Loans Desk.
When using SciFinder from your own computer you will need to configure your machine with client software in order to access the SciFinder Scholar Database. You will require your Staff/Student Number & UniPass to access the software.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS WINDOWS USERS [MACINTOSH USERS CLICK HERE TO SEE BELOW]
- Computer: PC with at least a 450 MHz Pentium-class or equivalent processor
- Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® 2000 (SP3 or higher), XP (SP1 or SP2), or Vista
- Memory : 256 MB RAM
- Available Hard Disk Space : 50 MB (not including pagefile memory); 90 MB for installation
For the SciFinder Scholar Toolbar, an additional 25 MB is needed; 75 MB for installation. This assumes Microsoft .NET software is already installed
- Connection : TCP/IP network-level connection to CAS via the Internet, Z39.50 application-level connection to CAS through port 210
Accessing full text via ChemPort® and online Help files on the CAS server requires an HTTP application-level connection through port 80
- Monitor : SVGA color monitor; 1024x768 screen resolution; 16 bit (64,000) colors
- Printer: High-quality graphics printer, e.g., laser or inkjet
- Web Browser: Microsoft® Internet Explorer (MSIE), version 5 or higher, Netscape®, version 7 or higher, or Mozilla FirefoxTM, version 1.0 or higher
A web browser is needed to access full text, online Help, and Internet resources within the Tools menu
- Plug-ins must be installed in the Netscape and Firefox plug-ins and components folders for some features in ChemPort, e.g., Reference Linking. The plug-ins are installed automatically during SciFinder installation
- JavaTM and JavaScriptTM must be enabled for online Help and some features in ChemPort

- Cookies must be accepted for some features in ChemPort

Adobe Reader is needed to display PDF documents available via the CAS web site and ChemPort. Adobe Reader can be downloaded at www.adobe.com

- Discovery Studio Visualizer or ViewerLite:
Discovery Studio Viewer products from Accelrys are visualization tools that allow you to view 3D molecular models for structure results.
SciFinder Scholar is compatible with DS Visualizer up to version 1.5.
- ViewerLite is no longer supported by Accelrys but may be obtained free
of charge from CAS at my.cas.org. ViewerLite is provided "AS IS," without warranties of any kind.
A software patch is available that corrects the viewing of 3D models with ViewerLite version 5.0. After downloading and unzipping the patch, read the MDMReadme.txt file for instructions
Is the SciFinder Scholar software already installed on your desktop?
YES:
1. Retrieve the SciFinder Scholar 2007 software [ sfs2007.exe] for Windows Users. [ ~12.2 MB self-extracting executable.]
2. Save to your hard disc in your TEMP directory.
3. Double-click on the sfs2007.exe file and follow on screen instructions.
4. Make sure you install SciFinder Scholar 2007 in the existing SciFinder Scholar folder e.g. sfschlr or Sfschlr. You may receive the message " Another version of SFS exists in this directory. If you continue installation, files from this existing version will be overwritten." Choose YES. 5. When asked "Select the setup type to install" we recommend Typical (the default.) 6. When you are asked if you have a disc labeled 'Custom Site Files' you should choose NO and follow the instructions.
7. You will now be able to access SciFinder Scholar 2007 from your desktop
NO:
1. Retrieve the SciFinder Scholar 2007 software [ sfs2007.exe] for Windows Users. [ ~12.2 MB self-extracting executable.]
2. Save to your hard disc in your TEMP directory. 3. Retrieve the SciFinder Scholar Custom Site Files. [ site.prf] 4. Save to your hard disc in your TEMP directory.
5. Double-click on the sfs2007.exe file and follow on screen instructions. 6. When asked " Select the setup type to install" we recommend Typical (the default.) 7. When you are asked if you have a disc labeled 'Custom Site Files' you should choose NO and follow the instructions. 8. Copy the file called site.prf from your TEMP folder into the sfschlr folder. (This folder is automatically created on your C: drive during setup.) 9. When the setup procedure is finished choose sfschlr.exe from the sfschlr folder or double-click on your SciFinder Scholar desktop icon if one has been created during setup.

Installation instructions for Mac OS X 2007

Download the SciFinder Scholar Mac OS X 2007 Software [ scholar-osx.dmg] (a Machintosh Disk Image File) and the site.prf file to your desktop or a download folder on your OS X drive.

Double-click "scholar-osx.dmg" to mount SciFinder Scholar (a Desktop volume containing the SciFinder Scholar Application Package).

Open the SciFinder Scholar volume if it does not auto-open.

Drag and drop the SciFinder Scholar Application Package to your Applications folder.

Eject (Unmount) the desktop SciFinder Scholar Volume.

(Optional) Create a "Scifinder Scholar" alias for your dock or desktop.

Click the SciFinder Scholar icon.

Pull down the Action Menu and select Show Package Contents.

Click Contents.

Click Max OS X
-
Copy site.prf into this folder (delete the site.prf file from your desktop).
Macintosh (OS 7.61, 8.x, 9.x) requirements:

- Minimum 15 MB (RAM) memory; 17 MB or higher recommended

You may, however, need to use a decompression program such as "Stuffit Expander" to expand it] 2. Double-click on the SciFinder Scholar Installer icon and follow on screen instructions. Make sure you install SciFinder Scholar 2004 in the existing SciFinder Scholar folder e.g. sfschlr or Sfschlr. If asked " Select the setup type to install" we recommend EASY (the default.) 3. If you are asked if you have a disc labeled 'Custom Site Files' you should choose NO and follow the instructions. 4. When installation is complete, the SciFinder Scholar 2004 folder is displayed. To create an alias (desktop icon) for SFS2004 click the SFS icon and select Make Alias from the File menu. Then drag the alias to the desktop.
Note: If you downloaded SciFinder Scholar (2004 Edition) for Macintosh prior to November 5, 2004:
1. Download the patch software [ sfs2004patch2.hqx] and save it to a temporary folder. [ ~5.20 MB self extracting executable.]
2. Use decompression software, such as "Stuffit Expander", to expand it
3. Double-click the "SciFinder Scholar 2004 Patch 2 Installer" icon to install the patch.
Note: you must select the folder in which SciFinder (2004 Edition) is currently installed.
4. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
NO:
1. Retrieve the SciFinder Scholar 2004 software [ sfs2004-2.hqx] for Macintosh Users. [ ~10.8 MB self-extracting executable. You may, however, need to use a decompression program such as "Stuffit Expander" to expand it] 2. Retrieve the SciFinder Scholar Custom Site Files. [ site2004.prf]. You will need to rename site2004.prf to to site.prf once it has been downloaded to your TEMP directory. 3. Save both files to your TEMP directory. 4. If asked " Select the setup type to install" we recommend EASY (the default.) 5. If you are asked if you have a disc labeled 'Custom Site Files' you should choose NO and follow the instructions. 6. Double-click on the SciFinder Scholar Installer icon and follow on screen instructions. 7. Copy the file called site.prf from your TEMP folder or Download Manager into the sfschlr folder. If you encounter problems downloading the site.prf file for MAC users, please contact the University Library 8. When installation is complete, the SciFinder Scholar 2004 folder is displayed. To create an alias (desktop icon) for SFS2004 click the SFS icon and select Make Alias from the File menu. Then drag the alias to the desktop.
