Access to Computers in UNSW Library


Conditions of Use & Rules

Internet access is restricted to research, teaching and learning activities only.

Conditions of Use & Rules relating to Student Use of Computing and Electronic Communications Facilities apply to all users of the UNSW Library web site and the resources made available through the site.

Downloading of movies, music and audio-visual materials for personal use is not permitted in the Library. Disciplinary action may be taken against students breaching the agreement, including a fine of $1,000. This type of activity is also a breach of Copyright.

Computers in the Library

PCs are available for use within the Library. Bookings for computers can only be made inside the Library.

Login and Passwords

A current and activated staff/student number and Unipass is required to access UNSW Library computers, electronic resources and Your Borrower Record information via the Catalogue (LRD).

Staff and students

Your staff/student number and a UniPass password are given to you at enrolment when you pick up your student id card from FM Assist in the Mathews Building. Before you can access online resources such as UniMail and My eLearning Vista, you need to activate your student account.

For any further queries relating to your Unipass, see the Online Services & Support website or drop in to the IT Assistance Counter, Ground Floor, Library Annexe (Building F21), Kensington campus.

For COFA Unipass queries between 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday, see the computer staff at the COFA CSU Helpdesk, Room 107, First Floor, F Block, COFA campus. For Unipass queries between 5.00pm - 7.30pm Monday to Thursday, and between 12.00pm - 4.00pm Saturdays, during session, see COFA Library staff.

Email

All UNSW correspondence (including Library notifications) are sent to your UNSW email account.

Printing from Computers

  • Printing in the Main Library
Black & white printing

Most computers are connected to b&w printers in the Library. If you are printing from My eLearning Vista, please download the document temporarily into the "temp" folder inside "My Documents" before sending it for printing. For information on printing and photocopying in the Library, please follow this link.

Colour printing

A colour printer is available on Level 2 (Main Library) near the computers. Colour printing costs $1.00 per page. To send a document to the colour printer (from computers within the Library), follow these steps:

1. Click on File > Print
2. From the Printer Name select LIB_LEV2_COLOUR1
3. Click OK and note the number of the PC you are printing from.
4. Go to the Print Release Station next to the colour printer on Level 2.
5. Find your job in the print queue by looking for the number of the PC you printed from.

  • Printing at COFA Library
All COFA students (including COFA General Education students) can print in the COFA Library and in the COFA Faculty Computer Labs using a COFA printing account. For more information click here.

If you are not enrolled in a COFA subject and you wish to print from computers in the COFA Library, just send the print job from the computer you are using, (accept the default printer), then seek assistance from the staff at the Loans Desk on Level 1. COFA Library staff will guide you through the printing process.

Black & white printing

Only b&w printing is available within the COFA Library @ 20 cents per page.

Colour printing

Colour and other formats can be printed from within the COFA Faculty Computing Labs (F Block) and via the Digital Printing & Copy Service, Room 108, First Floor, F Block.

Saving Documents

You can save your documents on the computer workstations temporarily in the "temp" folder inside "My Documents". Documents in the "temp" folder will be erased regularly. These documents can be sent to your own email account via the internet. You can also save your documents on removable devices such as floppy disks and USB memory sticks.

USB memory sticks

Memory sticks can be plugged into USB ports that are available at the front of the black Dell computers or via a USB port extension cable on computers that don't have easily accessible USB ports. Floppy disks can be used in most Library computers.

In the COFA Library please use the black Dells on Level 2 to access USB ports.

Zip, DVD/CD writing

There are no DVD/CD writers or zip drives in the Library.
However, WinZip freeware is installed on most computer workstations in the Library. You can save and "zip" large files before sending them via email. WinZip can be found under Programs, available on the desktop.

Scanning Documents

Scanning is available from the colour copier on Level 2 of the Main Library. Scanning costs 4 cents per item.

Scanning instructions

1. Scan your document on the colour photocopier on Level 2 near the printers. Follow the instructions on the lid.
2. Go to the scanning station (next to the print stations).
3. Double click on "L2 Scanner".
4. Double click on the thumbnail sketch of the document you've scanned.
5. Enter the email address to which you are sending the image.
6. Swipe your copy card.
7. Enter your PIN and press enter.
8. Using the mouse, click "OK" to send.

Scanning is not available in the COFA Library. Scanning is available in the COFA Faculty Computer Labs and the Digital Print & Copy Service, Room 108, First Floor, F Block.

Sending a Fax

Faxing is not available from UNSW Library. This service is available on Kensington campus from the Post Office and from many Union outlets such as stationery shops/newsagencies.

Faxing at COFA is available from the COFA Student Association, D Block (above the canteen).

Laptops

Borrow a laptop

Laptop computers may be borrowed for 2 hour use within the Main Library.

How to book a laptop computer:

  • book laptop computers via the Laptop tab in the Catalogue
  • you will be prompted to confirm your booking request before it is activated
  • you must show two photo ID's when picking up the booked laptop
  • bookings will expire if the laptop is not picked up in the first 10 minutes of your booking
  • check your laptop booking requests by logging into Your Borrower Record
Pick up reserved laptops from the Information Desk, Level 2, Main Library, Kensington.

Use your own laptop

You can use your own laptop computer in the Library.

Before using your laptop in the Library, check the following:

  • read the Access Requirements to check that your browser and computer are correctly configured to access Library resources and services on your laptop
  • to access the internet on your laptop you must connect to the UNSW Wireless Network (UniWide). This involves having a wireless network card installed and having your laptop configured to access UniWide at the IT Assistance Counter. For more information visit the UniWide Access page
  • access to the UniWide wireless network is currently provided free of charge to all users. It is available to all current staff and students and guest access for visitors can be arranged by contacting the IT Assistance Counter
  • UniWide is also available at the COFA Library in Paddington. Three UTP Cable access points are available in the COFA Library for postgraduate students who wish to use their laptops with direct access to the internet. To use these access points it is necessary to take your laptop to the COFA CSU Helpdesk, Room 107, First Floor, F Block, COFA Campus. CSU staff will configure your laptop to enable access. Please note that this service is available for COFA postgraduate students only
Other course related services

My eLearning Vista

You can access your My eLearning Vista course material through the My eLearning Vista site via the internet.

Listening to lectures (iLectures)

Many UNSW lecture theatres are now equipped with digital recording facilities called iLecture. Lecturers may make these recordings available through your My eLearning Vista site.

To listen to these recordings on Library computers, headphones may be plugged into the audio socket. This socket is on the front of the black Dell computers, or accessed via an extension cable on other computers.

EndNote

EndNote software is available for free download to UNSW staff and students from the ITS Software Distribution website. Please see the instructions on the EndNote page.
