Electronic Resources - Conditions of Use

  • The use of most of the UNSW Library's electronic resources is governed by licence agreements.
  • Each user is responsible for limiting use to non-commercial academic research or teaching/learning purposes, without systematically downloading, distributing, or retaining substantial portions of information.
  • This means that the download of an entire issue or issues of a publication is prohibited.
Conditions Of Use

  • Only limited copying of all copyrighted material is allowed. Under the fair dealing provision of the Copyright Act 1968, copying is allowed for specific purposes such as research or study.
  • The limits are:
  • Whole or part of one article in a periodical, more if on the same subject.
  • 10% or one chapter (whichever is greater) of a book.

  • Copyright and proprietary notices must not be removed from any printed or downloaded material, and all use of material must be cited appropriately.
  • The use of software, including scripts, agents or robots to download data/information is generally prohibited.
  • Failure to meet these conditions may result in the information provider suspending or cancelling access to the resources for the entire UNSW community.
Contracts override Copyright

The licence agreements with suppliers of databases and electronic journals override provisions of the Copyright Act 1968. These licence agreements usually work to limit the use of electronic resources. For example, some contracts may disallow articles from electronic journals to be included in study kits or included in the MyCourse database.

Linking to e-journal articles

Where licence contracts permit, MyCourse staff in the Electronic Resources Unit can provide Open URL SFX links to articles for use in WebCT or other similar online courses.
Links often provide access when contract licence provisions or copyright limits disallow items to be recommunicated via scanning and loading to the MyCourse database. Open URL links may be requested by contacting MyCourse Services Staff
