Access Requirements

UNSW Library systems (including the LRD, MyCourse, Sirius and SFX) work best with the following settings and access requirements. You may need to adjust the settings on your computer according to this information.

The Library recommends and supports the use of the following browsers for its access systems;

Browser Settings

Javascript Javascript must be enabled. Instructions.
Cookies Your computer must accept cookies. Instructions.
Cache Settings Specific Cache (cookie storage) settings must be applied. Instructions.
Pop-up Windows
Pop-up windows must be enabled.
Foreign Language Settings Display of some foreign language characters in the LRD requires specific setups. Instructions .
IE7 Security
To save records in Sirius MySpace turn off the Information bar for file downloads:
To stop the Information bar from blocking file and software downloads in Sirius
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Custom level.
4. To turn off the Information bar for file downloads, scroll to the Downloads section of the list, and then, under Automatic prompting for file downloads, click Enable.
Bookmarks
We strongly recommend against the use of bookmarks for accessing electronic resources.
URL's are constantly being changed by suppliers and many are subject to redirects, session numbers and authentication details.

Usernames & Passwords

  • You will require an activated current UNSW staff/student number and Unipass (Contact IT Services Support if you do not have these details) to access Sirius and your Borrower Information via the LRD.
  • Off-campus users not using a UNSW UDUS account will also be prompted to provide their UNSW staff/student number & Unipass to access electronic resources.
  • Some suppliers require additional resource specific usernames & passwords to gain access - these details are provided in the bar at the top of the resource access screen.
  • Some user groups (e.g. ULA, Foundation Studies) are not eligible for University-wide authentication and are therefore currently unable to access these systems.
Security Software / Firewall Restrictions

  • Access from a non-campus workplace often requires local computer support to enable Ports 443 & 9003 to enable access to electronic resources. More ...
  • On personal computers internet security software (eg Norton Internet Security, Norton Firewall, McAfee, Vet and Net Nanny) can block access to electronic resources. Check cookies, firewall and page access settings. More ...

Adobe Acrobat Reader
Required for many full text electronic journals & books to view pdf documents.

SciFinder Scholar
Client software is required to access SciFinder Scholar.
Software installation notes and requirements
CHEMnetBase plug-in
A browser plug-in allowing users to draw and upload graphical structure queries is required in CHEMnetBase.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics plug-in
A browser plug-in is required to view interactive tables in CRC Handbook of Chemistry & Physics.

Special viewers are equired for some formats for full text documents provided via MathsciNet.
